WESTPORT, Conn. -- As summer comes to a close, it’s nice to make changes in your home's interiors to reflect the season and rejoice in what fall has to offer.

So says Jill Kalman, owner/designer of Westport-based Bella Interiors.

"Just like we make adjustments to our wardrobe, so too should subtle changes to our interior spaces follow," she said.

The following are Kalman's fall suggestions.

Switch up your throw pillows: Move from light and bright (and fabrics like linen) to rich jewel tones and fabrics with texture, like tweeds, wools, or velvets. This simple step can dramatically alter the mood of a space. Adding a nice chunky, cozy throw is also a nice touch.

Add a cool animal print or fur throw rug: These can be placed on top of whatever existing flooring you have. They add graphic, texture and rich warmth for the colder months that lie ahead. Layering on the floor also adds great interest and texture.

Consider your coffee table: “Coffee tablescapes” as Kalman likes to call them, are one of her favorite things as they add lots of interest to your space. Layer your coffee table with stacks of books, ceramics, small trays, and decorative boxes and objects, keeping them low in height. Nice chunky candles are good to bring in for the season as they both add a cozy glow (the sun goes down earlier, after all), and offer a nice scent.

Think baskets and bins: Whether it’s back to school in your home or not, chunky weave baskets and bins provide great organization for kids, footwear, outerwear, backpacks and sports equipment. They are also great for log storage and extra blankets by the fire.

Go outdoors: Fall continues to be a great time for outdoor entertaining. If you don’t have a fire pit, it's easy to get free standing ones at local home improvement and patio stores. Make sure to add fun strings of lighting, candles, and throws and fill decorative patio and deck pots with seasonal plants and foliage.
