WESTPORT, Conn. -- Imagine a free service where someone else does your taxes? It's actually true for seniors and people on low incomes in Westport.
Make your appointments now for the AARP/IRS Volunteer Assistance Program.
Demand has increased for the service and so has the program. This year there are two locations with hours from Jan. 30 to April 17.
Appointments for the service at Town Hall may be made by calling 203-341-1050. The hours are Monday, Jan. 30 to April 17. 1:30 to 7 p.m.
Call the Center for Senior Activities at 203-341-5099 for an appointment there from Wednesday, Feb. 1 to April 12, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays, Feb. 2 to April 13, 1 to 6:30 p.m.
"This program is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service, and is available to all individual filers regardless of income or age," said Westport Department of Human Services Director, Sarah Heath.
If married, both husband and wife should be present at the appointment. Certain forms and personal and financial documents are required.
Taxpayers must bring the following:
- Copy of last year’s Federal and State tax return
- Identity documentation
- Government issued photo ID
- Social Security or ITIN numbers for all taxpayers and dependents
- Bank account/routing numbers (blank check preferable), if expecting a refund
- All 2016 income report forms received (SSA1099, W-2, W-2G (gambling winnings), 1099.
Other documents needed include receipts for deductible expenses, verification of the original purchase price of sold assets, receipts/canceled checks if itemizing deductions, and proof of health insurance.
“IRS-Certified volunteers are available to local residents of all ages and incomes at no charge," said Heath.
