Wayne E. Barker, 24, of 10 Christy St., was charged with two counts each of forgery and misapplication of property. He was arrested after he appeared in Norwalk court on an unrelated matter. His bond was set at $40,000.
Kimberly Ann Ruff, 36, of 41 Wolfpit Ave., Apt. 1E, was charged with four counts of identity theft and one count each of second-degree forgery and second-degree larceny. She turned herself in to police and was held on $35,000 bond for a court appearance later that day.
The investigation began in December 2015 when a resident told New Canaan Police that checks had been stolen from the mailbox. Over the next several months, other people came forward with the same complaints until the number of complainants reached a total of nine with the amount of checks cashed reaching $31,000.
Police said the suspects stole the checks, altered the payee information and then deposited them into separate bank accounts via a mobile device.
