A Fairfield County man driving with a blood-alcohol content nearly triple the legal limit was arrested after blowing through a red light and crashing into another vehicle, police said.

Officers from the Darien Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Post Road and Brookside Road at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, where there was a report of a crash that left two vehicles with heavy damage.

Police said that upon arrival, witnesses said the driver of a gray Chevrolet Suburban - later identified as Stamford resident Estuardo Reyes - ran a red light, striking a blue Land Rover Discovery as it began pulling out of Brookside Road.

According to police, officers attempted to make contact with Reyes, who was still in his vehicle, and when they knocked on the window to draw his attention, “he turned slowly toward the officers and appeared confused.”

When they opened the door to speak with Reyes, they “immediately detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Reyes, and noted his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.” Police said that when asked about the crash, Reyes didn’t have an explanation and mentioned seeing a green light.

Reyes, 44, proceeded to fail Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and was arrested for operating under the influence and cited for failing to obey a traffic control system. At Darien Police Headquarters, Reyes submitted to a breathalyzer, which found his blood alcohol content to be .1957 percent, nearly triple the legal limit.

Following his processing, Reyes was released on a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear back in court on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
