The incident took place around 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, when Fairfield Police officers responded to the area of Grace Street on a report of a motor vehicle collision, said Fairfield Police Capt. Robert Kalamaras.

Officers on the scene determined that the driver, later identified as Christopher Garcia, 25, was attempting to park his car and in the process struck four parked cars and one vehicle that was traveling on the roadway, Kalamaras said.

During the investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to believe Garcia, was under the influence, police said.

He was arrested for DUI, evading responsibility, and operating under the influence and held on a $500 bond.

Later in the evening, Garcia was being transferred from the detention/holding cell to the overnight prisoner cell and began fighting the shift commander who was attempting to put in a an overnight cell, Kalamaras said.

During a physical struggle, both Garcia and the officer went to the ground in a struggle.

Alert dispatchers in the Dispatch Center were able to see the struggle on the surveillance screen and called for the aid of other officers.

The shift commander was able to control Garcia until other officers could assist.

The officer was not injured during the fight.

Garcia was processed for additional charges including Interfering with an officer, and two counts of assault.

He is being held on an additional $25,000 bond.

"Had it not been for the observations of the dispatchers and their quick action, this incident could have had a much different result," Kalamaras said.
