A Stamford attorney has been arrested for allegedly failing to report the theft of six of his handguns after one of the guns was used to shoot at Stamford Police officers during an arrest attempt.

Ridgely W. Brown, 72, was arrested on Wednesday, July 10, on six counts of reckless endangerment and failure to report a stolen handgun, said Stamford Police Lt. Michael Noto.

Brown was arrested after he came to the Stamford Police Department on Monday, July 8, to report that six of his guns had been stolen sometime in October or November of 2018, Noto said.

When asked why he waited eight months to report the theft because state law requires stolen or lost guns be reported within 72 hours, he replied that he was an attorney and was conducting his own investigation, Noto said.

The next day, on Tuesday, July 9, one of Brown's stolen guns was allegedly used to shoot at Stamford Police officers during a narcotics arrest , Noto said.

"The Stamford Police Department takes the theft of guns very seriously and is continuing to investigate this case in hopes of identifying who stolen the guns and more importantly attempting to locate the guns before anyone is hurt," Noto said.

Following his arrest, all of Brown's remaining 19 guns were seized.

" The Stamford Police Department would like to remind everyone that gun owners have the legal responsibility to keep their weapons secured, especially if minor children reside in the home," he added.

Brown was charged under a new law that makes it a felony to intentionally not report a firearm being stolen or lost, Capt. Richard Conklin said.
