Although no formal complaint against the accused student has been filed, Central Connecticut State University in New Britain is investigating allegations of sexual assault against a student, according to Janice Palmer, a CCSU spokesperson.
CCSU president Zulma R. Toro issued a statement on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to the school’s social media about its investigation:
"Late today, allegations came to light about a student accused of sexual assault. As soon as I was notified of this information, I directed our new Vice President for Equity & Inclusion Craig Wright to begin an expedited and thorough investigation," Toro wrote. "If you have any information or were personally aggrieved, please contact Dr. Wright at craig.wright@ccsu.edu, as soon as possible."
In the video, which has gone viral in a day, a female student says she wished there were fewer people at the school "accused of rape, such as you," according to the campus newspaper, The Recorder.
Since the video, and the report in the campus paper, students have become upset over the allegations and are demanding action, The Recorder said.
School officials said Friday, Sept. 16, they had hired Shipman & Goodwin to conduct an independent investigation of the allegations because of the concerning posts and videos on social media, Palmer said.
"Make no mistake, Central Connecticut State University has a no-tolerance policy—this University does not and will not tolerate any type of sexual misconduct or bullying," Toro said in a statement. " We will do everything in our power to ensure our campus is a safe, welcoming environment for all."
Palmer said about 60 students turned out to the protest on Friday regarding the allegations.
