STRATFORD, Conn. -- Residents of a quiet Lordship neighborhood reacted with shocked amazement after learning a gun-wielding man shot at officers and was wounded by a Stratford Police officer in the exchange early Wednesday morning.

The shooting occurred on Margherita Lawn close to Russian Beach at about 4:45 a.m., state police said.

Gayle Ciccia lives on Victoria Lawn, the next street over. She leaves her home at 4 a.m. to go to work and was at a dentist's appointment when she began receiving text messages from her friends about the shooting. She didn't believe it.

"I said, 'You've got to be wrong. It's Lordship. Nothing happens in Lordship, especially a shooting,' " she said, laughing.

She was accompanying her friend Nora Grillo, who was heading to visit her sister-in-law, Anita Gorton, who lives on Margherita Lawn.

"She said she heard the shots, and I guess there were four or five," Grillo said. The women said they heard someone had seen the man with a gun and contacted police.

"Her house was lit up like a Broadway," Grillo said about the police car's roof lights after officers flooded the area.

Stratford Police officers found a white man with a handgun, when they arrived on the scene. When officers ordered the man to drop the gun, he advanced toward them and fired at least one round at police, police said. The two officers, who were not struck, returned fire and hit the man.

The suspect is in stable condition in Bridgeport Hospital, Stratford Police said.

At about 6:30 a.m. detectives from State Police Western District Major Crime Squad responded and took command of the investigation, she said.
