A 68-year-old Stamford man was arrested after firing shots from inside his car, that went into Scalzi Park while two youth football practices and an adult softball game were underway.

James Denardo was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, interfering with police, 50 counts of reckless endangerment and 22 counts of risk of injury to a minor, after being pulled from his maroon Cadillac by Stamford Police, said Capt. Richard Conklin.

The event unfolded around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, when a neighbor called police after Denardo began firing from his car on the dead-end section of Fourth Street and Washington Boulevard, police said.

When officers approached the Cadillac with guns drawn, Denardo, a local security guard, struggle briefly with officers during an attempt to get him out of the vehicle, Conklin said.

Police discovered Denardo had a loaded two-shot Derringer pistol and a loaded 9 mm Beretta, which he had purchased earlier in the day at Bob's Gun Exchange in Darien, Conklin said.

During a search, officers found two shell casings outside of the Cadillac. Police said the bullets reportedly landed on the playing field between the left and center field.

Conklin said Denardo'a gun permit was seized and sent to State Police who will review his case and possibly revoke his license, Conklin said.

Following his arrest, Denardo was taken to the hospital for a psychological exam and later released and arrested.

Denardo is being held at Bridgeport Correctional Center on $75,000 bond.
