STRATFORD, Conn. — The Town of Stratford recently received about 40 acres of land as part of a 2012 agreement with Bridgeport to create a smaller, safer Sikorsky Airport.

The town received a roughly 34-acre parcel — including the entrance and parking lot at Long Beach and a 7.65-acre site at the corner of Access Road and Lordship Boulevard — in the improvement project at the airport, which is owned by the city of Bridgeport.

Bridgeport received a state grant as compensation for the land transfer to Stratford, according to Marc Dillon, Stratford’s chief of staff.

“This was a prime example of how neighboring communities can mutually benefit while working together to solve long-standing issues,” said Stratford Mayor John Harkins. “Stratford now has a cleaner, smaller and safer airport within its borders, which will benefit residents for decades to come.”

Back in 2012, Harkins and then-Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch signed an agreement that reduced the airport’s footprint, corrected flooding issues and addressed other challenges. It was ratified by the Stratford Town Council and the Bridgeport City Council.

Under the agreement, the length of the both runways cannot change. Tax revenue from any new structures or expanded private operations will go to Stratford.

More than 10,000 cubic yards of Raymark waste was remediated and transported out of Stratford as part of road relocation under the plan.

“I’m pleased that our partnership with Stratford and the FAA has resulted in a modernized Sikorsky Airport,” said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim.
