CT Location Among 28 Macy's Store Closures Announced

A Macy’s location in Connecticut is among more than two dozen being closed down nationwide, continuing the trend of traditional brick-and-mortar retailers shutting their doors.

Macy's in Meridan is among the locations set to close nationwide.

Just after Pier 1 announced plans to close nearly half its stores, Macy’s said that it will be closing at least 28 stores in the coming months, including the location in Meriden at the Westfield Meriden Mall.

According to Macy’s, the location at the Westfield Mall will kick off a clearance sale by the end of January, which is expected to last two or three months. As many as 85 employees will be eligible to be relocated to a nearby Macy’s or will otherwise be eligible for a severance package.

"The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is proud to have served the Meriden community over the past 49 years, and we look forward to continuing to do so at nearby Macy’s stores including Macy’s Brass Mill Center, Macy’s Westfarms Mall and Macy’s Pavilions at Buckland Hills as well as online at macys.com," the company wrote in a statement.

In a statement, Meriden Mayor Kevin Scarpati said that he “was formally notified from Macy's Corporate Office late this afternoon that they will be closing the Meriden Westfield location. The rationale provided was not based on the individual store performance, rather the overall corporate view and strategy of Macy's management.

“We are committed to working with Macy's and Westfield Meriden to ensure the development of this property will benefit our City in the near future."
