STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Peace Basketball Club, a local youth development program serving girls and boys from ages 5 to 18 years old from in and around lower Fairfield County, recently announced it has formally changed its name to Stamford Peace Youth Foundation.

The new name reflects the organization's ongoing broad commitment to youth engagement and development, according to its leaders.

“From the organization's earliest days, our focus has been to develop young people through our combined programming in basketball, academics and citizenship,” said Brian Kriftcher, Stamford Peace's founder and president. “Our new name, Stamford Peace Youth Foundation, better reflects that.”

Founded in 2008, Stamford Peace uses basketball instruction, training and competition, as well as academic support, in its efforts to assist local young people.

In 2013, the organization formalized its academic support by establishing the Beyond Limits Academic Program to provide math and science tutoring, informal peer mentoring and other enrichment opportunities both to its basketball student-athletes and other Stamford Public Schools students in grades five through 12.

Beyond Limits has grown from a handful of tutoring sessions to more than 60 sessions weekly.

Currently, approximately 100 students participate in the program.

In addition, participants are eligible for enrichment activities, including workshops covering time management and study skills, test preparation and strategies and financial literacy.

Tutoring fees are highly subsidized by Stamford Peace, with an hourly rate of $4 for students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch in Stamford Public Schools.

The Stamford Peace Youth Foundation name and logo will be introduced in the coming months throughout the organization’s programs, website and social media platforms.
