Stamford American Stuns Redding

Stamford American scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday to stun Redding, 13-12, in the first game of the District 1 Little League tournament for 10- and 11-year-old players.

Nick DePreta's three-run home run cut the lead to 12-7. Then American scored five more runs with two outs. The winning run scored when DePreta beat out an infield hit, allowing a runner on third to cross home plate.

In other Pool B games Friday night, Darien National defeated National Lione, 9-7, and Stamford Federal beat Ridgefield National, 6-0. In Pool A, Darien American beat Norwalk, 17-4, North Stamford beat Springdale, 8-2, and Wilton spanked Ridgefield American, 9-1.

The District 1 tournament for 10- to 12-year-old All-Stars resumes Saturday with six games. At Veterans Park in Norwalk, North Stamford meets Norwalk at noon. Other games feature Springdale vs. Ridgefield National at Aldrich Field in Ridgefield; Weston vs. Ridgefield American at Bisceglie Field in Weston; Stamford American vs. Northrop at Caporizzo Field in Stamford; Darien National vs. Redding at the Redding Boys and Girls Club; and Darien American vs. National Lione at Springdale in Stamford. All the games begin at noon.
