The only thing Trinity Catholic High School's Frank Spoto may enjoy more than playing baseball is showing kids how it's done. Spoto, who also plays for the Stamford American Legion team, was one of the counselors working with players ages 6-12 at the Crusader Baseball Camp Friday at the high school.
Trinity Catholic baseball coach Tracy Nichols and Mike Walsh, the school's basketball coach and a long-time coach of various summer teams in the Stamford Babe Ruth program, run the clinic. Friday's action wrapped up the two-week camp.
"I love helping these kids out, making them better baseball players,'' Spoto said. He was working with an older group of players, ages 9-12, and the campers played a simulated game before taking their cuts in a Home Run Derby.
"You can see them improve,'' said Spoto, whose 12-year-old brother, John, participated in the camp. "Then you see them outside of camp where they are in a real game and it helps them relax and have fun."
The camp ran from 9 a.m. to noon, and the weather was nearly ideal throughout the two-week run. "They've been good students,'' Spoto said, though "sometimes the heat has gotten the best of them."
