Babe Ruth Bats Heat Up At Last

The Stamford Senior Babe Ruth team kept waiting for its bats to get as hot as recent temperatures as the team scored a total of only four runs in the first two games of the New England Regional . Stamford finally got the offensive boost it needed, exploding for 15 hits beating up on New Hampshire 13-0 in a five-inning mercy rule win.

"We got some key hits that we didn't get in the past two games," Stamford manager Mike Walsh said. "I think our bats started getting hot at the right time."

Nate Newhall was brilliant on the mound allowing only three hits, relying on his fastball and his defense to get outs. Connor Garrity put Stamford in control early with a two-run double, staking his team out to a 4-0 lead in the third. Stamford's dormant offense was unleashed in the fifth when they scored eight runs in the inning, sending ten men to the plate. Sean Mullins and Mike Scaturcchio put the game out of reach with back-to-back two-run doubles. Scaturcchio also added a solo home run.

Coach Walsh knew a lopsided game like this one was just what the doctor ordered to restore confidence in his team after Friday's frustrating loss.

"Hopefully we're going to continue to keep on hitting as we go through the tournament," Walsh said. "It was nice to see them swinging the bats like that today. If we can do that and pitch like that in this tournament we'll be okay."

Stamford will take on Eastern Massachusetts Sunday at 11 a.m. at Cubeta Stadium. It is a must-win game for both teams since they are in the losers' bracket. If Stamford comes away with a victory, it will play again at 5 p.m. against the loser of Housatonic Valley and Western Massachusetts.
