Through the United Way’s Workplace Volunteer Council, a coalition of businesses that promotes the critical importance of volunteerism in the community, the Business to Books Read-a-thon was launched in 2002. The purpose of the Business to Books initiative is to promote literacy and enhance public education by increasing community volunteerism in the schools.

The following companies visited Stamford elementary schools in late April/early May and read to a total of 2,800 children: Deloitte, GE, Greenwich Associates, Holland & Knight, Legg Mason, NBCUniversal, Nestlé Waters North America, Pitney Bowes, Preferred Brands International, Shipman & Goodwin, Starwood Hotels, U.S. Trust and Xerox.

“The Business to Books Read-a-thon is a fun and educational event that both children and volunteer readers look forward to each year,” said Kim Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut. “We all win when young people thrive in school. United Way is committed to helping children achieve greater academic success.”

In addition, a number of community partners joined in the fun including the City of Stamford, Family Centers and Inspirica.
