Forty-seven OHS Science Research Program students were among more than 550 from the region to compete in the annual event, according to a release from the school district.
The winners earned seven first-place awards, 12 second-place awards, four third-place awards, nine fourth-place awards and 11 special awards, the release said.
Four students who received the top scores earned coveted spots in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles this May. The students are Chinmai Deo (medicine and health), Sarah Hoffman (biochemistry), and Lior Raz-Farley and Michelle Zhang (team project in biochemistry). Twelve individual projects and the three top teams won the awards.
Junior Skyler Jones, who entered her chemistry project in the Westchester Science & Engineering Fair, won one of seven spots at the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and the Environment Project Olympiad in Houston this May.
Juniors Jack Kaitz (medicine and health) and Nicholas Tremaroli (computer science) were selected to attend the GENIUS Olympiad, an international competition focused on environmental issues, at the State University of New York at Oswego in June. Nine projects submitted by sophomores and juniors were chosen for the honor.
Also this month, several OHS Science Research Program students received awards at the New York Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Brianna Cauthen earned first place for her biomedical science presentation. She will be attending the national competition in San Diego next month.
Adriana Scanteianu won a third-place award for her molecular and cellular science presentation.
In the poster category, Mark Zhinin was awarded first place in the medicine category. John Kim and Greg Vutera tied for second place in the behavioral science category. Raz-Farley won second place in biochemistry.
This was the 13th consecutive year that OHS had more student finalists making presentations in the upstate symposium than any other school in the Westchester Rockland Subregional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, according to the release.
