STAMFORD, Conn., -- Mayor David Martin met recently with several key state government leaders in Hartford to try to minimize state budget cuts that will impact the city and to lobby them to invest money in the city.

Martin met with Secretary Ben Barnes of the Office of Policy and Management, Senate Pro Tem Martin Looney, D-New Haven, and Beth Bye, D-West Hartford, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Martin described the meetings as very productive as he shared the concerns he has with regard to this year’s state budget plan and the potential impact it will have on Stamford.

“As the state Legislature goes through its budget process, it is important for me to meet with state leaders who will be making decisions that will directly affect the amount of state funding we receive,” Martin said. “This is clearly a difficult fiscal environment, but too many cuts to a growing city like Stamford could be detrimental in the current and future years. While we have an excellent state delegation who will fight hard for our citizens, it is equally important that I personally meet with state leaders so they fully appreciate why it is important to fund and support Stamford.”

The mayor’s meetings focused on minimizing cuts, but he also encouraged the state to invest in Stamford’s future as leaders consider funding for education, transportation and infrastructure projects.
