Congresswoman Jahana Hayes hosted a virtual meeting with Newtown residents this week, when she was interrupted by someone who interfered and used derogatory terms and flooded the conversation.

“I’m so sorry to the people of Newtown who had to sit through this zoom bombing episode,” Hayes posted on social media on Monday, Oct. 12. "During our virtual conversation, these people continued to call me the N-word, play disgusting derogatory music, and flood the chat with comments like this.”

Hayes posted photos of some of the comments (warning, racist language) which can be found here, with commenters expressing support for President Donald Trump.

Among the messages posted by the “Zoom bombers” were “GO PICK YOUR COTTON,” TRUMP 2020,” and “Trump is the best president the U.S. has ever had!!!!”

The Congresswoman used the opportunity to remind voters to head to the polls next month to vote in the election.

“This behavior is being normalized! We can ALL choose not to accept it,” she wrote. “Please vote on (Nov. 3).”

Hayes, who is a member of the Committees on Education & Labor and Agriculture, represents Connecticut’s 5th District, which includes parts of Fairfield, Hartford, New Haven and Litchfield counties, including Danbury, Waterbury and New Britain.

A Democrat who became the first African-American woman and African-American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress after her election in 2018.
