A former Uber driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman he picked up outside a Stamford bar.

Awad Nour, 38, of Bridgeport, was arrested on Tuesday,  July 16, for the incident which allegedly took place on February 9, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.

According to police, the Darien woman, who reportedly had been drinking, called an Uber to take her home after being out with friends in Stamford, police said.

Nour arrived and picked up the victim and during the drive to her home, he parked his vehicle in the area of 1100 Hope St. and proceeded to sexually assault the victim in the vehicle, Conklin said.

The victim, who fought back, reported the crime and was treated at the Stamford Hospital for the assault.

Stamford Police followed up with an investigation that led them to charge Nour with sexual assault, Conklin said.

"While we are glad we were able to take this predator off the street and hopefully provide the victim with some degree of justice, we want to continue to warn everyone to be careful and vigilant when using ride-share applications," Conklin said.

Conklin suggests rider-share users always identify that the driver and the vehicle match the information from the application, pay close attention to the route the driver is taking to your destination, make sure you are able to get out of the car, sit in the rear passenger area, keep your phone in hand, make sure a third person knows your using the service.

Most importantly, he said to avoid traveling alone at night.

Nour is being held on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, July 30.
