A U.S. Postal Service employee was almost stabbed when he attempted to stop a man who had hit another vehicle in a parking lot.

The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Stamford U.S. Postal Service parking lot on West Avenue when the employee heard the crash and found a New Jersey man looking at the damage, said Stamford Police Sgt. Brian Butler.

When the man, identified as Rejnal Tushe, 29, of Jersey City, tried to flee the scene, the employee attempted to stop him from driving away.

Tushe began yelling at the employee and attempted to punch him in the face, but ended up hitting him in the torso, Butler said.

Tushe then attempted to drive away in his Nissan Altima but the employee jumped in the backseat of the vehicle again trying to stop him from leaving. But instead of stopping, Tushe grabbed a knife from the front seat and began trying to stab the employee, Butler said.

As Tushe kept attacking the employee, another employee ran up and grabbed his wrist to prevent the stabbing, Butler added.

The first employee was able to jump out of the vehicle before Tushe took off and the second employee was able to take a picture of his license plate before he made it out of the parking lot, he said.

During a search by Stamford Police, K-9 officer David Dogali found Tushe asleep in his car a short distance away on Selleck Street.

Tushe, who was positively identified, was charged with two counts of assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, breach of peace, and illegal possession of a weapon in a vehicle.

He is being held on $15,000 bond.
