The incident took place around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, when the East Haven Police received a 911 call from a visiting nurse at the Caroline Manor Assisted Living facility reported a possible overdose of two employees.

Upon arrival, East Haven Fire Department personnel were directed to a lower level office and found a male employee apparently suffering from an accidental overdose, said Captain Joseph Murgo, of the East Haven Police.

They also discovered a female employee suffering from an overdose on the main floor of the facility, he added.

Narcan was administered by East Haven Fire Department personnel to both parties before they were rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further treatment.

Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Upon the arrival of East Haven Police personnel, it was determined that a visiting nurse who happened to stop by to check on one of her patients discovered the only two employees of the assisted living facility overdosing on what was later determined to be fentanyl.

"The facility did not have any other staff on the scene during this incident and while this was occurring patients were left with no supervision," Murgo said.

The East Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division responded to the scene and seized the narcotics which were left out and in plain view when officers and fire department personnel arrived.

No patients were injured during this incident, which remains under investigation.

Murgo added that the facility had been visited in August by the Department of Public Health and the Fire Marshal for a surprise inspection at which time several violations were identified and enforcement action was started.

The facility was due to be reinspected on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

At the direction of Fire Chief Matt Marcarelli, the Fire Marshal was notified of the latest incident along with the DPH and was coordinating a response and further investigation.
