Officer Awarded For Tracking Down Suspect Who Attempted To Steal Mother's Purse In Norwalk

A Norwalk Police officer was recently named Officer of the Month for tracking down a suspect who attempted to steal a woman's purse as she was putting her baby in a car seat.

Officer Ramon Tejada came to the rescue on Friday, May 31, when the woman was walking to her vehicle with her seven-month-old child on North Water Street, said the Norwalk Police Department.

While walking, she noticed a man following her. As she opened her car door and began to place her child into the seat, the mother noticed the man stop and linger behind her vehicle. 

As she began getting into the car, she noticed the man approaching her door. She screamed at the man to go away, police said.

 The man then ran around the car and opened the passenger door and attempted to steal her purse, which was on the seat. 

The two began to struggle as the woman attempted to close her door, the man was attempting to force his way into the vehicle.

 The woman was eventually able to close the door and the suspect fled on foot.

Tejada was flagged down by the victim’s husband, who had responded to the scene. 

After receiving a description and checking on the victim, he began to search the area. He noticed a man matching the woman's s description walking on Marshall Street and attempted to detain him.

 The man began to struggle violently, but Tejada was eventually able to subdue him when back-up officers arrived.

The man was positively identified by the victim and placed under arrest.
