Jerrell Gatewood, of Bridgeport, was shot once around 9:42 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the area of 5th Street, said Bridgeport Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald.

He was struck in the torso and collapsed at the scene. Bridgeport Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene one minute later and requested that police and medics respond to their location, Fitzgerald said.

Gatewood was treated at the scene by American Medical Response personnel and then transported to Bridgeport Hospital where he died a short time later.

Detectives do not believe this was a random act of violence and are exploring leads in the case, police said.

Gatewood previously survived being shot in September 2013 on his 29th birthday.

He is the sixth homicide victim in Bridgeport this year.
