John Nikolas Bakes, 72, Longtime Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. -- John Nikolas Bakes, 72, died in his home in Stamford on Saturday, June 6. 

Bakes was born in Pellana, Sparta, Greece, on Feb. 26, 1943, to Nikolas Bakes and Panagiota Triandafilou. He moved with his family in 1960 to Stamford, where he had lived ever since.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Vaso Drakopoulos Bakes; and their two daughters, Patty Bakes Servos of Athens, Greece, and Martha Bakes Mavridis , of Stamford. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Gerasimos Servos and Konstantinos Mavridis; and his three grandchildren, Vasiliki Ioanna "Vana" Servos, Konstantinos Servos and Evgenia Mavridis. He also is survived by his brothers, George N. Bakes of Stamford, and Christos N. Bakes of Norwalk; and his sisters, Yianoula Morfis of Pellana, Greece, Koula Perdikis of Athens, Greece, and Christina Dedousis of Stamford.

Bakes began his longtime profession as a butcher for Grade A Supermarket in Stamford before opening up and running his own business, Bakes Meat Market, in 1970. He worked there until his retirement in 2013. He was an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, having served many years on the Parish Council. He was a member of the Stamford Hellenic Association, "The Club," a major supporter of the Hellenic Society Paideia and an active member of the Pellana Society.

Through his profession, he was able to contribute and volunteer countless hours of preparing and cooking food with utmost pride for various events in the Greek community, including the annual Stamford Annunciation Greek Festival.

Arrangements are being handled by Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. Visitation is at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 9, from 4-8 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, 230 Oaklawn Ave., Stamford.
