STAMFORD, Conn. – Anthony W. Kolenda, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died at Stamford Hospital on Monday, Feb. 1. He was 88 years old.
He was born Oct. 12, 1927, and was one of four children born to the late Anton and Genevieve (Kuzma) Kolenda.
He attended Stamford schools and began working part time at the railroad while he was in high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1945-48. Upon returning home from the service, he returned to work at the railroad and enjoyed a 46-year career until his retirement from Metro-North Railroad in 1990. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed boating on Long Island Sound, fishing, gardening and his many trips with his wife, Phyllis, to their condo in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis (D'Elia) Kolenda; his children, Stephen A. Kolenda and his wife, Diane; Janice R. Burke; and Anne Marie Ferrara and her husband, Christopher; his grandchildren Frank Burke III, Kathlyn Kolenda, Margo Kolenda, Christopher Ferrara Jr., Mitchell Ferrara and Brendan Ferrara; sister, Frances Gill; and sister-in-law Theresa Kolenda.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Chester and Walter Kolenda, brother-in-law Edward Gill, sister-in-law Cecilia Kolenda and son-in-law Frank J. Burke, Jr.
The Kolenda family will receive the sympathy and condolences of friends and family Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford. The interment will immediately follow Mass at St. John Roman Catholic Cemetery in Darien.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to a charity of one’s choice . The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford.
