STAMFORD, Conn. -- A Stamford woman was arrested Thursday, Feb. 11, and charged with illegally collecting more than $23,000 in unemployment compensation benefits, according to the Office of Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane.
Kawana Brickhouse, 37, was arrested by inspectors from the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney and charged with one count each of first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community and unemployment compensation fraud.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Brickhouse fraudulently collected approximately $23,101 in unemployment benefits from February 2011 through July 2013 when, in fact, she was employed by temporary employment agencies.
Brickhouse was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Feb. 18.
The larceny charges are punishable by not less than one year or more than 20 years in prison and/or up to a $15,000 fine; the unemployment fraud is punishable by not less than one year or more than five years in prison and/or up to a $5,000 fine.
