Nutrition Is on the Menu for Workshop

Moms with picky eaters or whose kids fight over food won't want to miss a workshop called "Setting the Table: Skills for Making the Most of Mealtimes." It will take place in Stamford on Thursday, Oct. 14. Organizers promise lots of learning, as well as a laugh or two.

Bridget Fox, chair of the Stamford School Readiness Council, said those attending will "benefit greatly." The workshop will be given by public health expert Charlie Slaughter, primary prevention coordinator with the state Department of Children and Families. The council is hosting the workshop with support from the United Way of Western Connecticut.

"Parents and child-care providers will benefit greatly from Charlie's ideas not only around healthy food choices for children, but also around ways to make mealtimes a meaningful and fun experience," said Fox, emphasizing the importance of childhood nutrition.

Two presentations will be held. The first is targeted to child-care staffers, nutritionists and nurses, and will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Childcare Learning Centers, 90 Maple Ave. The second, geared toward parents and caregivers, will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the Stamford YMCA, 909 Washington Blvd. Light snacks will be provided and child care will be available. Drivers may park in the Bell Street Garage.

That's not the only food-related event supported by the United Way this week. Coinciding with the Columbus Day holiday, Webster Bank is celebrating its 75th anniversary today, and area residents are invited to drop by Columbus Park at Main Street and Washington Boulevard from 2 to 3 p.m. for free ice cream. The "Day of Giving" event marks the bank's founding on Oct. 11, 1935.
