With his trial approaching, New Haven resident Michael Fontaine pleaded guilty in court to first-degree sexual assault and first-degree robbery on Friday. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 26, when he is expected to be handed a 25-year term behind bars.

On Dec. 17, 2016, police said that Fontaine’s victim took a trip into Manhattan, arriving home at approximately 10 p.m. The victim proceeded to walk home when she was attacked by Fontaine, who was hiding in nearby bushes.

A neighbor alerted police when they heard a woman shout out, and she was able to stumble to a nearby home. Investigators then followed a trail of blood and footprints in the snow, which led them to Fontaine, who had recently been released from prison.

Fontaine, 48, has previous drug and burglary convictions dating back to the 1980s. He’s also been incarcerated in Massachusetts and was arrested in Pittsburgh.
