George Maio, 96, WWII Paratrooper

Funeral services were held Thursday for Stamford resident and World War II veteran George Maio, who died Jan. 3. He was 96 years old. Maio was born in the Bronx on June 14, 1914. He served as a paratrooper during the war. Maio worked in the restaurant business, operating restaurants in the Bronx, Yonkers and Florida. Reading, watching television and listening to music were among his favorite pastimes. He also was devoted to the New York Yankees. Before becoming ill, he was committed to walking every day. Maio was dedicated to his family.

He leaves a son, Rocco Maio and his wife, Marisa, of Yonkers; three daughters Joan Simonelli and her husband, Larry Davidoff, of Stamford, Debie Hague and her husband, Joe, of Dublin, Ohio, and Terri Barnes of Lumberton, N.J.; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa Maio, and daughters Georgeann Robertson and Regina Fox.
