Eugenia Aretakis, Proud of Greek Roots

Eugenia Aretakis, a longtime Stamford resident, died last month after an extended illness. She was 84. Aretakis, known as Jean, was one of four children, and the only daughter, of Greek immigrants. She was proud of her heritage, which she celebrated over her life.

Aretakis was born in Newport, R.I., and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. She earned an associate's degree from Packer Collegiate Institute and worked for New York's Motion Picture Institute. She also worked for Combustion Engineering in Stamford.

She and her husband, George A. Aretakis, were married in 1951 and had three children, whom they raised in Stamford. Her husband, a World War II veteran, became the city's finance commissioner. Aretakis was athletic throughout her life, enjoying such activities as water aerobics and doubles tennis. Other favorite pastimes included walks at Cove Island Park, art and music, reading and conversation.

Aretakis was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her children, Gregory, Dyan and Jonathan; and two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
