Elderly Driver in Stamford Cafe Crash Arrested

STAMFORD, Conn. — Police have arrested the 92-year-old Stamford man who crashed his car into Café Oo La La on Aug. 8, injuring 10 people.

Samuel Leighton was charged with second degree reckless endangerment and reckless operation of a motor vehicle, police said in a release. He was released on a promise to appear at Stamford Superior Court on Sept. 2.

Leighton was attempting to park his Honda in a handicapped spot in the Ridgeway Shopping Center cafe when he apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. He drove up onto the curb and through the storefront, police said.

The announcement of Leighton’s arrest comes one day after police arrested Dewayne Carey, who investigators say broke into the cafe after losing his job there.

The crash investigation was conducted by the department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.
