Dr. Charles Sheard, Stamford Physician

A memorial service is planned for Dr. Charles Sheard, who served area residents for more than four decades as a private practice Stamford physician. Sheard died Sept. 25 at age 95.

Sheard inspired many with his dedication and service. He was a graduate of the University of Toronto and Columbia Presbyterian in New York City. During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

In addition to his private medical practice, he served as a staff member of several hospitals and nursing facilities, wrote two books on clinical diagnosis and was an adjunct fellow professor at New York Hospital Cornell Medical School for more than 30 years. Sheard was concerned about providing community health services. His legacy includes the establishment of a free walk-in clinic affiliated with New York Hospital-Cornell. He also helped develop a center for the treatment of tropical skin disease in Grenada, an island on which he first set foot in the 1960s. He subsequently began lecturing at St. Georges University Medical School, which he did each year until he reached age 93.

Sheard was married for 68 years to wife Patsy, who died in 2002. He is survived by daughters Pamela Sheard McGuinness of Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., and Wendy Sheard Geyer of Falmouth, Mass. A memorial service will be held in Canada.
