“Travels with John” opens with a public reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road.

Newcomb’s gallery runs through Sept. 27 and features 50 watercolors inspired by his visits over a 25-year-period to Africa, Argentina, Australia, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Greece, India, Japan and Russia, to name a few.

Also on display will be eight of Newcomb’s large-scale acrylics, including the 3-by-9-foot triptych entitled “Long Way Home.”

The former The New York Times magazine art director’s art hangs in collections found throughout the world. Newcomb describes his style as anything but timid or delicate, instead loading his works with paint until the “colors snap,” said the artist in a statement.

The gallery is Newcomb’s second at the Wilton Library. His first one-man show came in 2011 and featured more than 100 paintings.

Paintings are available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Wilton Library. The library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays beginning Sept. 13.

More information is available online by visiting wiltonlibrary.org or by calling 203-762-3950, ext. 213.
