Ballet Opens its Doors for Open House

Anyone who has just moved into a newly renovated home might want to show it off. And with family members such as Artistic Director Michael Vernon in the house, the Ballet School of Stamford is eager to display its new space to the public. It'll welcome viewers to an open house at Old Town Hall, 175 Atlantic St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

"After many months of work and support from our city leaders, we are excited about the move to our new home and are looking forward to showcasing our new studios in this historic building," said Marti Etter, executive director of the ballet.

Tours of the facility will be offered, and rehearsals and sessions will be open for observation. Vernon and other faculty members will lead classes that reveal their teaching technique and artistic approaches to dance.

The newly refurbished historic building in downtown Stamford is the third home in as many years for the school, formed in 1988 with 50 students. It now boasts 300 students ages 3 to 18 enrolled at the Ballet School and participating in "Dance for All," the school's outreach program. In addition to ballet, modern and theater dance are also taught.

Ballet School of Stamford, a nonprofit entity, has entered into partnerships with Fairfield County social service organizations to offer youngsters who otherwise could not afford dance classes the chance to study. It also collaborates with other arts organizations on projects.

In establishing its new home, the school collaborated with the City of Stamford and the Old Town Hall Redevelopment Agency.

All are invited to see the new facility and watch the creative development of young dancers during the Saturday open house. Refreshments will be served. For more information and to RSVP, call 203-358-8853.
