STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Emergency Medical Services annual appeal, a fundraising effort to finance SEMS' paramedic ambulance services throughout the city, is officially underway.

“We have been serving the Stamford community for nearly 25 years, and most people are surprised to learn that we’re a private nonprofit,” said Patricia Squires, SEMS’ executive director. “We’re not part of Stamford Hospital or the Fire Department, and we’re not a volunteer organization. We’re providing top quality paramedic and ambulance service, and we’re funding that service independently.

“Our fundraising efforts go directly to capital expenditures, i.e., ambulances, heart monitors and other lifesaving equipment. You can see tangible evidence of your donation at work every day in our community.”

SEMS, which responds to over 14,000 calls annually, is the only ambulatory service in the state accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services.

Statistics bolster the nonprofit garnering such recognition: nationally about 30 percent of cardiac arrest victims survive their attack, but the rate for SEMS patients is 50 percent.

SEMS' response time also outpaces the national standard.

“People don't always think about or understand the true value that emergency medical service brings to the community – that is until they need it,” said Squires. “Please consider a tax-deductible donation to SEMS; the life you save might be your own.”

SEMS is headquartered at 684 Long Ridge Road.
