Java. Joe. Rocket Fuel. Mud. Whatever you call it and however you take it, coffee is a necessity of life for many and a pleasant now-and-then pick-me-up for others. Lucky for us, Hudson County is packed with winning java joints—but perhaps that’s to be expected when Jersey City ranks as #25 on WalletHub’s 2018 Top 100 U.S. Coffee Cities.

Bwe Kafé, 1002 Washington Street in Hoboken and 140 River Drive South, Jersey City. With a portion of proceeds going to various organizations helping Haiti—including owner Maryann Fike’s own Love for Haiti which helps children and youth on the island—you can enjoy Haitian beans bursting with flavor and do good in the world. Cozy with friendly staff.

Ispresso at Park, 4701 Park Avenue, Union City. With a distinctive setting and a dedication to making your hand-crafted coffee perfect, you can enjoy that cup of joe straight up black or try one of the iced or hot lattes. The place to go if you’re in town, according to Facebook comments.

Square 1, 283 St. Paul’s Avenue, Jersey City. Called a great brunch spot with Instagram-worthy meals on Yelp, the coffee is no slouch! This place calls itself a community eatery, a place to share space and connect. Square 1 proudly serves Jersey City’s own Kobrick coffee, a 4th generation family-owned-and-operated roaster and distributor.

Black Rail Coffee, 800 Jackson Street, Hoboken. It’s all about coffee at Black Rail, but the pastries and gourmet-pressed sandwiches are more than worth a try! Family-friendly with welcoming staff, you only find glowing reviews on its Facebook page: “Great coffee!”

Modcup, three locations in Jersey City: 25 Senate Place, 479 Palisades Avenue and The PATH at Exchange Place. Specializing in exotic, fresh-roasted coffees, you can buy one cup of java made to order by a knowledgeable barista or a bag of whole beans to go. These people know their coffee and love it as much as you do.
