STAMFORD, Conn., -- The story of a native New Yorker and her sisters, Pfeni and Gorgeous is told in the heartfelt comedy, The Sisters Rosenweig, about women grappling with their life choices, that is being performed in the Curtain Call's Dressing Room Theatre. It begins tonight and runs through May 22.
"But it's way more than a 'chick flick'" said Curtain Call executive director and producer of the show, Lou Ursone. "It's a really wonderful romantic comedy that appeals to all sexes," Ursone added. Sara, who lives in London, is a representative for a major Hong Kong bank and is about to turn fifty-four. Her sisters arrive to help celebrate the birthday. Gorgeous is Dr. Gorgeous with a radio advice program; Pfeni is a world traveler. Various friends and boyfriends also arrive for the party. In particular, Mervyn, a friend of Pfeni's boyfriend Geoffrey, falls instantly in love with Sara.
Written by Wendy Wasserstein, the original production (spanning two theatres) ran for more than 700 performances in 1992 and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Among the luminaries in that cast were Robert Klein, Jane Alexander and Madeline Kahn - Kahn won both the Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Best Actress Awards. The New York Times said of the original production " A captivating look at three uncommon women and their quest for love, self-definition and fulfillment. But underlying the comedy is an empathetic concern for the characters and for the prospects of women today."
Wasserstein was exceptionally good at combining the serious and the silly in her writings throughout her all-too-brief career (she died at age 55). She used some of the basics of her own life — being single, Jewish, well-educated, cultured and a feminist — as well as the events of her time to create theater pieces in which likable characters, particularly female characters, try to make sense of their lives.
Directing this production is Stamford resident and Curtain Call co-founder, Lynne Colatrella. Production design is by Peter Barbieri, Jr. (FAIRFIELD) with costume design by Peach Kraft (DARIEN). The cast includes, from STAMFORD: Tim Cronin, Donna Fox, Alex Kantarelis, Kimberley Lowden, Jeff Pliskin, Ellen Krinick Porto; from BRIDGEPORT: Tony Republicano; and, from NORWALK: Meghan Hennessey.
