BYOB Eateries Could Be Approved In Garfield

GARFIELD — The City of Garfield is considering lifting a BYOB ban on restaurants that don’t currently serve alcohol, according to NorthJersey.com.

The ban on diners bringing their own wine or beer to local restaurants has been in place since 1979, and Mayor Richard Rigoglioso, who is suggesting the policy change, said the city loses business to other areas because of it.

"Every other town has a BYOB. By not having it, people or either going to break the law or leave town to go to a BYOB," Councilman Frank Calandriello told NorthJersey.com. "People either want to go to a restaurant with a bar or they don't, but this can give an opportunity with new developments down the line."

A new ordinance could include a minimum square footage and occupancy number, and require restaurants to have table service.
