Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education has officially merged with Stamford Youth Tennis Academy as of Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The merger comes in an effort to provide “stronger support services” for children and youth throughout Fairfield County.

The new organization, called Norwalk/Stamford Grassroots Tennis & Education, Inc., has a mission to utilize various aspects of tennis and education to build character and an overall “foundation for success.” The new organization will be able to become more influential and make more of an impact in the communities they serve.

“Our mission is to build strength of character and a foundation for success through tennis and education. We provide programming both on and off the court that supports the whole child – meeting their physical, academic, and social-emotional needs,” said Betsy McNeil, who served as Executive Director of the Norwalk organization and will retain the same title and role with the new Grassroots organization. “We achieve this with a relationships-first, youth development approach where we meet each child where they are and work in partnership with them to support their efforts to achieve their goals.”

Grassroots expects to serve a core group of between 200 and 250 children ages five through 18 in the upcoming year. The free program integrates tennis instruction with academic support and character development.

“As we transition into this new organization, we will embark on a strategic planning process in the coming year to take a look at where we’ve been, where we are, where we want to go and how we are going to get there,” said McNeil. “We are eager to step back, and explore how we can deepen and expand our impact in service and support of the increasing number of kids coming to our program.”
