Keyur was entered into the competition as a junior, joining more than 1.5 million juniors, representing 22,000 high schools, who took the qualifying test in 2014.
Keyur enjoys essay writing, public speaking and debating, and has a passion for electronics and robotics, according to Junior State of America, a nationwide group to which he belongs.
A pool of nationwide semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, was selected, school officials said.
They are competing for scholarships that -- all told – are worth more than $36 million.
To become a finalist, school officials said the candidate must have an outstanding high school academic and be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal. He or she must also earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
Merit scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, school officials said.
The winners for 2016 will be announced starting in April and ending in July.
