A Connecticut middle school student has been charged with making threats against a staff member and against the school.

The incident took place in Middlesex County on Wednesday, May 25 in Old Saybrook.

The unidentified teen was arrested after Old Saybrook Police received an anonymous complaint about a student making concerning remarks in the past about "shooting up a staff member" and "blowing up" the middle school, said Chief Michael A. Spera, of the Old Saybrook Police.

In a letter to parents, Old Saybrook School Superintendent Jan Perruccio said: "Please know that at no time did law enforcement or public school officials believe that any student, faculty member, or school campus was in danger."

After the anonymous tip, the "targeted" staff member was made aware of the situation and expressed confidence that the situation was being handled correctly, the chief said.

The matter was investigated by law enforcement and school officials and the student was not allowed at school on Wednesday before being arrested.

"While extremely concerning, the student did not possess or have access to any materials required to carry out any past threats that were made," Spera said.

Perruccio wrote that "officials rely on you and our students to bring matters of concern to our attention in a very timely manner.

"In situations concerning the safety and security of our schools, seconds matter," she said.
