Man Killed After Van Crashes Into Pole At Busy Long Island Intersection

An investigation is underway after a man was killed when the van he was driving went off the road and struck a pole at a busy intersection on Long Island.

It happened just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Deer Park.

Michael Scavone, 70, was driving a 2003 Ford Econoline southbound on Commack Road when it veered off the road and struck the pole at the intersection of Long Island Avenue at 9:36 a.m.

Scavone, of Dix Hills, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives believe he may have suffered a medical emergency immediately prior to the crash.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
