A man asleep behind the wheel of a parked car in Fairfield County was busted with an illegal weapon when officers went to check on his well-being, police said.
In New Canaan, officers investigating a motor vehicle crash shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at the intersection of Cherry Street and East Avenue were approached by a pedestrian who advised them of a person asleep in a car on Burtis Avenue.
A New Canaan Police Department spokesperson said that officers were able to locate the sleeping man - later identified as New Canaan resident Christian Arita, age 25 - on Burtis Avenue, and when they made contact with him, they noted a 12-inch K-bar knife on the passenger seat.
According to police, Arita was then taken into custody and charged with illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle because the blade was longer than four inches in length.
Arita was transported to New Canaan Police Headquarters and processed on the weapon charge. He was released on $2,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court in June.
