Darien Police say officers responded to the area of 72 Old Kings Highway on the report of a hit-and-run crash on Tuesday, June 25 around 4:30 p.m.

The report stated that a dark-colored 1997 Toyota 4Runner left the roadway and struck two cars parked in a nearby driveway, according to police.

Police say a witness was able to follow the suspect's vehicle, which was stopped at the northbound rest area of I-95.

An officer made contact with the driver, identified as Avalos Jose Hernandez, 45, and observed heavy damage to the vehicle’s front right side — damages consistent with the evidence at the accident scene, police say.

Hernandez was determined to be the registered owner of the vehicle and was driving at the time of the accident. Police say they detected the odor of alcohol when interviewing him.

Hernandez was asked to participate in a series of field sobriety tests, which police say he did not pass.

Hernandez was arrested and transported to headquarters for processing, where he agreed to a breath test that gave a reading of .1934, police say.

Hernandez was charged with DWI, evading responsibility and failure to drive right. He was issued a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Stamford Court on Monday, July 8.
