A total of 12 people were hospitalized, several with severe injuries, when two minivans crashed in Stratford.

It happened around 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20 near the intersection of Main Street and Putney Valley Way, Stratford Police Capt. Frank Eannotti said.

"Many of the injuries are severe," Eannotti said.

Some of those hospitalized are children.

The injured were transported to St Vincent's and Bridgeport hospitals. 

Further details, including the extent of the injuries, have not yet been released.

"The scene is still active and under investigation," Eannotti said.
