But swimming areas at three inland lakes and ponds are closed, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.
For Labor Day Weekend, the beach at Wadsworth Falls in Middlefield is closed due to the presence of high levels of bacteria
And the swim areas at Kettletown State Park in Southbury and Indian Well State Park in Shelton remain closed because of the continued presence of blue green algae.
The parks are open, but swimmers are not allowed in the water at the three parks.
Blue-green algae occurs naturally in lakes and ponds throughout Connecticut. The microscopic organisms often go unnoticed and cause no harm.
However, when nutrient loading exceeds certain levels, a pond or lake can experience nuisance blue-green algae blooms that may produce and release toxins.
During a bloom the following conditions may be seen:
- The water may be cloudy or even thick like pea soup.
- It may look like someone spilled paint on the water.
- The water will likely be green or brown.
- There may be a mat of algae, scum or foaming on the water surface.
This is the final water quality report of the season from DEEP because the state parks water quality testing program runs only from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
