SHELTON, Conn. -- The upcoming 2016 Juneteenth parade will have two grand marshals from Shelton, with Mayor Mark Lauretti and Police Chief Shawn Sequeira taking the helm for the annual event on Saturday June, 11 in Bridgeport, according to the Shelton Herald.
Juneteenth, celebrated each year on June 19, is the celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation. Both Lauretti and Sequeira told the Shelton Herald that their selections to represent the city was a privilege, said the Shelton Herald.
The Emancipation Proclamation was made official Jan. 1, 1863, but the first celebration of the event took place June 19, 1865 in Texas.
