Juneteenth, celebrated each year on June 19, is the celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation. Both Lauretti and Sequeira told the Shelton Herald that their selections to represent the city was a privilege, said the Shelton Herald.

The Emancipation Proclamation was made official Jan. 1, 1863, but the first celebration of the event took place June 19, 1865 in Texas.
