Shelton Man Charged With Identity Theft In Unemployment Fraud Case

SHELTON, Conn. -- A Shelton man has been charged with using a former co-worker’s identity in an attempt to illegally collect unemployment benefits, according to the chief state's attorney's office.

Rui A. DaSilva, 34, was charged with third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, second-degree attempted larceny by defrauding a public community and attempted unemployment compensation fraud.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, DaSilva used a former co-worker’s name, address and Social Security number in an attempt to fraudulently collect unemployment compensation in September. DaSilva was already collecting benefits under his own name, address and Social Security number at the time, the warrant states.

The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit agter a complaint by the Connecticut Department of Labor. 

DaSilva's bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 5.
