But a glitch in the system at Hackensack Meridian Health is wrongly allowing the general public to register for the vaccine, ABC7 reports.
The glitch presents itself as a link in the MyChart system -- a patient portal within the hospital system -- allowing first responders to jump the line for vaccinations.
The glitch also allows patients to create appointments to family members.
Hackensack Meridian spokesman Ben Goldstein said there has always been a disclaimer on the website, which has since been enhanced, and no one outside of priority groups has been able to get appointments or cut the line.
"You have to ask yourself, 'Why are people who are not first responders still trying to get appointments?'" he said.
"It’s clear we’re only doing this for first responders."
"We did not text or email the registration link to patients," Mary Jo Leyton told ABC.
The individuals who signed up for vaccines, who shouldn't have been able to, are being "weeded out," Goldstein said.
"Yesterday we were making personal calls because we think it’s the right thing to do, and make sure it’s crystal clear why they’re not getting these appointments."
